Judith pix (2)

This unique virtual learning series was initially designed for people with disabilities, families, friends, independent facilitators, supporters and allies from Windsor and Essex County. As such, we began to build a learning community in Windsor and Essex County in 2021-2022.  The series expanded beyond local boundaries for year two in 2022-2023 – welcoming folks from all over Ontario

The entire learning series called “Exploring the Power of Support Circles” – four sessions, four themes – will be ending on April 19, 2023.  New people are welcome to register for this last session – even if you have never attended in the past. There will be lots of good nuggets to take away!

No matter where you are on your journey – whether you are new to the idea of a Support Circle, or not – this type of learning benefits individuals and families at every stage of life – from childhood through to adulthood.

For a full description of all four sessions in the learning series, see this flyer:  Learning Series, Exploring the Power of Support Circles, 2022-23

My Home My Choice – Sharing, Listening & Learning Together
June 2021 Virtual Series . . .

Relationship Building: My Home logo
Let’s just start with one thing!

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

Two different sessions offered:
Morning session 10:00-11:30am   OR
Evening session 7:00-8:30pm

Register by Tuesday, June 15 by Clicking Here.

This is an interactive event that includes family stories, sharing of ideas and more!
  • TakeoutListen to families share stories about what their family members have done to build or enhance their relationships and/or to be more present and seen in their neighbourhoods and community.
  • Family leaders will also share their goal for what they would like to try next, knowing that it will feel difficult but also doable.
  • Participants will be exploring what they feel would be doable has a first step or a next step. Lots of ideas will be shared.

Relationships are important in everyone’s life. This is true for many reasons: for staying safe, for just figuring out some of life’s decisions or next steps by talking with others, for feeling stronger to try new things, etc. Despite how important this is, families who are supporting a son, daughter, sister, brother or grandchild with disabilities, find this to be one of the hardest things to do. This event will help many of us to look at how we might take on just one small manageable thing, helping us to figure out what our one ‘small thing’ will be!

NEXT UP:
Family Games Night & More
Wed. March 3rd, 2021

6:30 – 8:00 pm

Back by popular demand (and because broken cable lines meant they couldn’t lead us in games on Feb 3rd) are our fabulous game hosts: the Kerr Family!  Join us as families get together virtually over Zoom for some fun.

Heather, Donna, and Sheena are ready with their costume bling and their friendly hosting skills to help us have a fun evening – especially those of us who have never done something like this before. Feel free to join our hosts wearing some fun attire or anything that makes you feel comfortable – if you would like! This is purely optional, your choice.  It was fun to see what some families wore last month: feathery boas, large funky earrings, fabulous and silly hats, and more – including comfy sweatpants!

Photo Stream: Our Favourite Spaces: We will start the gathering rolling through a few photos of a favourite spot or room received from people and families.  We all have our own favourite spaces, and it’s good to see how the little things in our homes bring us everyday joy.  If you want to send us a picture, we would love to add it to the photo stream. Again optional – your choice… see the full invite for ideas! Participants who send in a picture will have their name entered into a Spin Wheel draw that evening for a Tim Horton’s card.

Games: The Main Event! Heather will be our game host, while Donna and Sheena keep score — as they lighten up the tail end of winter for us!   We are pleased they’ve agreed to lead us.  As families, we struggle at times to hold things together, thinking about the future, and surviving day-to-day. We experience ups and downs, with good days and bad, on our journeys. This evening is for us to take care of ourselves and have fun!

This evening is a chance to build strength and resilience together. It is an opportunity to re-group.  Maybe, by the time we are finished, some of us may even have enough confidence to hold a games night with our own family or friends.

————–

We are pleased to begin the year 2021 with a virtual series of learning events and family conversations.  People and families will be able to register for any of the events they choose. There is no requirement to register or attend the whole series. Many thanks to our My Home My Choice Committee members and partners for their support.

My Home My Choice 2021 Virtual Series Continues. . .

NEXT UP:
Family Conversations & More!
Wed. February 3rd, 2021

6:30 – 8:00pm

We invite you to be a part of our upcoming family gathering as we get together virtually over Zoom for some conversation, quiet listening, sharing and fun.

The first part of our evening we will hear what some families have done to find moments to laugh through the pandemic, holding on to their sense of humour.  (If you have any funny stories or links to share, please let us know!)

During the second part, we will play a virtual game together, led by family leaders/members of Windsor-Essex Family Network – Heather, Donna and Sheena. Heather will host the game, while Donna and Sheena keep score. They will share their favourite game (or two) with us, one that has lightened up the winter for them and their extended family.

Their extended family members enjoyed playing so much that they asked for more game nights.  Beyond their extended family, this trio has been asked to host a games night with other social groups they belong to who have heard about their talent.  We are pleased they’ve agreed to lead us in a game or two. Prepare to laugh and have some fun!

A few family leaders including our hosts, thought it would be fun to wear some ‘interesting’ accessories to get others smiling – a silly hat, funky glasses, boas, any imaginative winter attire! You are welcome to consider this as well – the sky’s the limit.  However, it is purely optional; it is not a requirement to wear something silly. Most important is to wear whatever is comfortable as you prepare for a light-hearted evening.

As families, we struggle at times to hold things together, thinking about the future, and surviving day-to-day. It takes inner strength and resilience. We experience ups and downs, with good days and bad, on our journeys.   This evening is for us to take care of ourselves.

This families’ gathering is our chance to build strength and resilience together. It is an opportunity to re-group.  Maybe, by the time we are finished, some of us may even have enough confidence to hold a games night with our own family or friends.
